بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ bismillāhir raḥmānir raḥīm In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.

ٱلْقَارِعَةُ al-qāri`ah THE STARTLING CALAMITY.

مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ mal qāri`ah What is the startling calamity?
3
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ wa mā adrāka mal qāri`ah How will you comprehend what the startling calamity is? --
4
يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ yawma yakūnun nāsu kal farāshil mabthūth A Day on which human beings would be like so many scattered moths,
5
وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ watakūnul jibālu kal `ihnil manfūsh The mountains like the tufts of carded wool.
6
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ fa-ammā man thaqulat mawāzīnuh Then he whose deeds shall weigh heavier in the scale
7
فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ fahuwa fī `īshatin rāḍiyah Will have a tranquil life;
8
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ wa-ammā man khaffat mawāzīnuh But he whose deeds are lighter in the balance
9
فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٌ fa-ummuhu hāwiyah Will have the Abyss for abode.
10
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا هِيَهْ wa mā adrāka mā hiyah How will you comprehend what that is?
11
نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌۢ nārun ḥāmiyah It is the scorching fire.
